Where do you go when you’re on a Maine island 12 miles out to sea to wind down the week that was on Friday night? On North Haven, the several year-old Calderwood Hall is the place to be for some of the finest pizza anywhere on the Mid Coast, even if it is on an island.
The shared thread of cooking goodness, Calderwood has its roots from the kitchens of Nebo Lodge, and the recipes for the pizza dough are part and parcel of that fine island kitchen.
Talk about thin crust and imaginative, these pies are essentially crisp and crusty with all the right craggy edges. We started off with a Greek salad, with those fine tomatoes and feta from Turner Farm. The three toppings we chose were peach and prosciutto; chorizo and tomatoes and the green salad pizza, a pie topped with local arugula adorning the base of tomato and cheese. The tomatoes on these pies are all fresh, not canned, and it makes a big difference.
The place has a full bar offering drinks fixings, wine and beer. And the crowd assembling there ran the gamut: swell summer residents to the requisite millennials and family tribes enjoying the great pizza served here. You can have desserts like Rice Krispy squares to ice cream sandwiches stuffed into housemade peanut butter cookies.
